About

Stack to AGI maps the physical infrastructure behind AI: ten layers, from the energy and materials at the bottom to the machines that act in the world at the top.

Who writes it

Mark Rühle Bosch, a senior mechanical engineer at Lumentum in Zürich, where he develops advanced photonics and laser systems. He holds an MSc in mechatronics engineering, and bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering and in electronics and automation engineering. He is a long-term investor and technology analyst, following AI infrastructure, semiconductors, hyperscalers and robotics.

Why it exists

It comes from an interest in where engineering, physics and economics meet, and in how large language models, AI agents and physical infrastructure come together to create real-world value. Its aim is to teach: to make visible what makes frontier technology possible.

How it is made

Facts are cited to named sources, estimates and derived calculations are labelled as such, and opinions are kept apart from both. Where a claim is time-sensitive it carries the date it was checked, or its layer's as-of line where it has not yet been re-verified. Sources are ranked before they are used — see the method and the source register. Every release is checked automatically before it is published, and material changes are recorded in a private revision log. AI tools help with the research, the drafting and the code behind this site. The judgement, the decisions about what to include and the responsibility for what it says are the author’s.

Independence

The author works at Lumentum, which makes optical and laser components and appears in this report’s value chains for semiconductors, for compute and networking, and for connectivity (layers 3, 4 and 9). The report is written in a personal capacity, does not represent Lumentum’s views, and draws only on public information. The author also holds investments in some of the companies discussed here; they are listed on the disclaimer page. No company named on this site has paid for, sponsored or reviewed its coverage.

Corrections

If a figure is wrong or out of date, a public contact address for the site is being set up. Until then, corrections are tracked privately and folded into the text with their date.

Reuse

The text, data and diagrams are licensed under CC BY 4.0: you may share and adapt them, including commercially, with credit to “Stack to AGI, MRB Labs” and a link back. Company logos and element photographs are not covered by this reuse permission. MRB Labs exists to close the gap between the technology we use without thinking about it and what actually makes it possible.
